Hudud Will be implemented

KUALA TERENGGANU: PAS stressed that it will implement hudud laws even if it faced opposition from its allies in Pakatan Rakyat as the Islamic party did not have any deals with the DAP and PKR as to not to implement the laws, said PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Abdul Hadi stressed that the party had long struggled for hudud laws to be implemented even before it joined hands with the other two parties.

“This had existed even before the opposition pact. So, we don’t have any issues in implementing it,” he was quoted by Bernama.

“We did not have any agreement with DAP and PKR saying that we will not implement hudud,” Abdul Hadi said when met at Terengganu state assembly meeting, Tuesday.

His statement threw support behind the Kelantan state government which had wanted to table two private bills in Parliament for it to enforce hudud laws in the state, as early as next year.

The latest push for hudud laws to be implemented came about after Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, the minister in charge of religious affairs, said in Parliament last month that the federal government was prepared to cooperate with any state government in enforcing hudud laws.

Subsequently, Kelantan PAS reportedly said that it was preparing a private members bill to bring to Parliament, and declared that the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment can be implemented in the state.

Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah was quoted as saying that the draft bill was ready and the earliest date for the tabling was June.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng before this had said that DAP is firm on its stand that hudud should not be implemented and added that he did not want the Kelantan state government’s intention to be exploited by the Barisan Nasioanal.

“Everyone knows our stand. There is nothing for us to add,” he said when asked on DAP’s stand on the issue.

DAP’s Segambut member of Parliament on Monday stressed that 38 MPs from the party had openly declared that they do not support the bill.

“Our stand is clear, DAP MPs will not vote for hudud laws,” he said.

PKR deputy president Mohd Azmin Ali on Sunday said the state government’s proposal has not been officially discussed among Pakatan Rakyat leaders and added that it will be raised at the coming Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council meeting.

“I am positive that if there were any fears from any quarters, Pakatan will discuss the issue. We have not hid anything, we want the people to get a clearer picture,” Azmin said.

He had also explained that PKR’s stand over the issue remained the same: that hudud is not part of the Pakatan Rakyat general policy framework and it will not be implemented without consensus from Pakatan allies.
