PN is prepared to face any possibility of a general election despite repeated denials by the government that the 16th General Election (GE16) will be held this year.

PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ustaz Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said he believed the government is worried and uncertain about its current level of public support despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressing confidence in the unity government.

“I am confident the government is actually afraid and unconvinced of the support it currently has.

“Although the prime minister has stated that support for the government is improving, the reality is otherwise.

“As for PN, we are ready to mobilise the party’s streng to face any possibility,” said the Kubang Kerian member of parliament.

Ustaz Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Pas deputy president, said many political parties viewed Melaka as an important indicator of public sentiment ahead of the next general election.

“I believe most political parties want to make Melaka, in particular, a benchmark of the people’s support,” he said.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had not given any indication that GE16 would be held this year.

However, Fahmi, who is also PH communications director, said the coalition was gearing up for possible state elections, with its upcoming national convention on May 17 set to determine its strategic direction.

Fahmi said the convention in Johor would serve as the official launchpad for the coalition’s machinery ahead of possible polls in Johor and Melaka.
