Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar is among those being considered for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Opposition leader post to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the coalition’s newly appointed chairman and Terengganu Menteri Besar, has extensive experience.

However, Takiyuddin, who is also Pas secretary-general, said no final decision has been made as all eligible candidates are being considered.

“As mentioned by the PN chairman recently, we will announce the name by the end of the month or early next month.

“What I can confirm is that the new Opposition leader will be a Member of Parliament from Pas,” he told reporters after handing over Hari Raya goodies to Kota Baru Pas area leaders yesterday.

Takiyuddin said the number of candidates shortlisted was not an issue, adding that several factors were being taken into account, including Ahmad Samsuri’s current role as Menteri Besar of Terengganu.

“We are assessing whether it is suitable for him to hold both positions.

“We have had such experience before in 1999, the Terengganu Menteri Besar also served as Opposition leader, and there was no issue.

“Previously, the PN secretary-general also held the Opposition leader post.

“We will assess the situation and select the best among us,” he said.

When asked if he would accept the role if chosen, the Kota Baru Member of Parliament said Pas leaders would abide by the party’s decision.

“As Pas members, we follow the leadership’s directive. If instructed, we will accept,” he said.

Ahmad Samsuri on March 14 said PN will appoint a member of parliament from Pas as the new opposition leader, with the announcement expected before the end of this month.

The post is currently held by Larut Member of Parliament and former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.

Samsuri who is Pas vice-president, said the decision was made during the PN Supreme Council meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
