KUALA TERENGGANU – The High Court here today dismissed an appeal by a police officer to set aside a decision by the Kemaman Sessions Court in finding him guilty of graft.

In dismissing the appeal, High Court judge Datuk Abd Rahim Uda also ordered DSP Nordin Ahmad, 52, to serve two years” jail and pay RM25,000, in default six months jail, from the 14 days” jail and RM25,000 fine imposed by the lower court.

Abd Rahim made the decision after hearing submissions by deputy public prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Ng Siew Wee, and defence counsel, Maanor Yusoff.

In his judgment, Abd Rahim said bribery was like cancer and dangerous because if not eliminated it could lead to the collapse of a nation.

“Not only Islam, other religions also prohibit corruption because of its effect on the victims, but also other people, and if not stopped can destroy the social structure,” he added.

He said as a police officer, Nordin was aware of the seriousness of the offence and should have carried out his job honestly and responsibly.

Last April 25, Nordin was found guilty and sentenced to 14 day”s jail and fined RM25,000 by the Kemaman Sessions Court for soliciting RM5,000 bribe from one Mohd Nizam Abd Hamid in return for helping to release him from the Simpang Renggam Rehabilitation centre to banishment.

He was charged with committing the offence at the Kampung Fikri Flat, Kemaman, about 8.05pm on Oct 23, 2005, while he was attached to the Detention Division of the Bukit Aman Narcotic Investigation Department.–BERNAMA
