Political and economic affairs analyst Prof Hoo Ke Ping said, PAS can make several changes in GE14 specifically, among Chinese voter.
In a Chinese-majority seat with a sizeable number of Malay voters, Prof Hoo pointed out, it is a PAS candidate rather than an independent who is likely to make a difference.
“In Chinese seats where the fight is between MCA or Gerakan and Pakatan, it is a PAS candidate who can draw away a chunk of the Malay votes, not an independent,” he said.
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s Assoc Prof Dr Jeniri Amir also believes that independents will not be a big factor in GE14.
“The fight in GE14 is going to be between Barisan, Pakatan and PAS and independents are only going to be irritants,” he said.
He said the presence of independents will make GE14 livelier but they should not harbour any hopes of making a mark in the coming polls.
“Voters are more aware and will want to vote for candidates representing a party that can actually form a government,” said Dr Jeniri. – source thestaronline
