Maidam Stops Sending Its Students To Egypt

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 22 (Bernama) — Beginning next year, the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) will send all students under its sponsorship to Jordan and not Egypt as was the previous practice.

Its chief executive officer/secretary, Wan Harujan Sulaiman said this was because Maidam found that the learning system in Egypt was lagging behind besides the students’ safety aspects.

“This is the government’s policy and we need to follow,” he said when asked by reporters about the matter, here today.

Wan Harujan said Maidam was following the Terengganu Foundation (YT) which no longer sent students under its sponsorship to Egypt to avoid the students’ failure and thus causing losses to the government.

He said however, about 260 students who were studying in Egypt at various levels would continue to be funded by Maidam until they completed their studies.

He said Maidam would consider sending its students to Egypt in future if the situation in the country had stabilized.

Wan Harujan said Maidam officers were sent to Egypt last week to meet and advise their students to focus on their studies as they did not want them to fail.

For that, he said, Maidam would increase the incentives if the students obtained the excellent results.
