In KUALA TERENGGANU, where a six-year-old boy was killed in a fireworks explosion on Sunday, police arrested a man and seized firecrackers valued at RM8,000 in a raid in Kampung Beladau Kepong early yesterday.

Terengganu CID acting chief Supt K. Manoharan said the 39-year-old man of Kampung Losong Atap Zink led police to an unnumbered house in Kampung Sungai Rengas where more than 300 packets of firecrackers were recovered from the boot of a car.

He said it was believed that the firecrackers were for sale during the festive period in the Chabang Tiga area and the night markets.

Manoharan said the man was being held under remand for four days until Friday to help in the investigation.

In ALOR SETAR, a 10-year-old girl injured her right eye when a fireworks set off by a neighbour hit her near her house in Taman Seri Abadi on Monday night.

Nor Syafiqah Abdul Halim, a Standard Four pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Peremba, was hit by the fireworks set off by a youth under a tree where she was waiting for a friend to go for the “tarawih” prayers, said her mother Noraishah Mohd Saad, 47, at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

“My daughter underwent surgery for four hours that night. Her condition is stable but she is having blurred vision,” she said.

Kota Setar police chief ACP Abdul Ghafar Rajab, when contacted, confirmed the incident and said a 17-year-old suspect had been identified for causing grievous hurt.

In MALACCA, a civil servant was arrested last night at his house in Cheng for having RM10,000 worth of fireworks and firecrackers.

Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Salehhudin Abd Rahman said police held the 41-year-old man at 10pm after finding 10 huge boxes containing the fireworks and firecrackers.

He said police did not rule out the possibility that the items were for sale.

Salehhudin advised the people not to buy fireworks and firecrackers as they were contraband goods-Bernama
