Worsening Flood In Terengganu, 1,638 People Evacuated

KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 7 (Bernama) — The flood situation in Terengganu has worsened since two days ago with the number of evacuees reaching 1,638 from 450 families compared with 692 yesterday evening.

A National Security Council spokesman in the state said Dungun which was hit by flood late last month, was affected again this time.

He said that until 9am today, 935 people from 283 families in Hulu Terengganu had been evacuated compared with 414 yesterday, while in Setiu the number rose to 403 from 102 families (259 from 65 families yesterday).

The situation in Kemaman, which was hit by flood yesterday evening, has worsened where the number of evacuees rose to 265 from 19 yesterday.

In Dungun, six people from two families in Kampung Telaga Mas, Paka were evacuated to the Kuala Paka Umno building.

Marang was also hit by flood with one family evacuated to the Kampung Temala Community Hall yesterday.

The spokesman said all roads linking Kuala Terengganu to Kelantan and Pahang, however, were passable to all vehicles this morning.

The water level of Sungai Besut at the Kruak Bridge is now at 35m, exceeding the danger level of 33m, at 19.2m in Kampung La (danger level – 17.2m) and 8.9m (7.3m) at Jertih Bridge.

The water levels of Sungai Dungun at Kampung Pasir Raja, Kuala Jengai and Jerangau Bridge, Sungai Kemaman at Tebak Bridge, Ban Ho Bridge and Air Putih Bridge, Sungai Terengganu at Kampung Menerong, Sungai Berang at Kampung Dura, and Sungai Setiu at Kampung Besut and Chalok Bridge have also breached the danger levels.
