The Work of BERSIH 2.0 Continues

584

BERSIH 2.0 once again thanks the Rakyat for their courage and their peaceful and overwhelming support for the cause of free and fair elections and democracy shown on the 9th of July 2011.

We once again express our profound regret for the tragic and needless loss of the life of Allahyarham Baharuddin Ahmad who will forever remain in our hearts as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuing a noble cause.

We further express our regret that the six leaders of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) continue to be wrongfully detained under the Emergency Ordinance. The reports we hear on the treatment they are receiving causes us great alarm. We call for their immediate and unconditional release.

The work of BERSIH 2.0 continues. We believe that the best way forward is for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry consisting of experts acceptable to the Rakyat, to look into comprehensive electoral reform before the 13th General Elections and we reiterate our call for this to the Government.

In the interim, we call for the following:-

a)      A public disclosure of all amendments to the electoral process as proposed by the Election Commission to the Government which were not accepted.

b)      A public dialogue with the Election Commission on the demands of BERSIH 2.0

It is clearly the wish of the Rakyat that we move forward with the agenda for electoral reform. Until such reform is achieved we ask for the Rakyat to show their continuing and peaceful support by wearing something yellow every Saturday.
