KUALA TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA – A spate of 16 pregnancies and four deliveries since last year prompted the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of a secondary school here to convene an emergency meeting on Tuesday.
The PTA only got wind about the pregnancies after a Form Three student gave birth to a baby boy at Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital last Sunday.
Her friend related the incident to a PTA committee member. When the news spread, there was an uproar in the community which led to the PTA convening an emergency meeting.

One of the committee members said another girl had applied to be transferred to a school in Setiu when she was six months’ pregnant.
He said the transfer did not take place as the Form Five girl’s uncle in Setiu had refused to let her stay at his house after knowing about her pregnancy.
“The girl delivered a baby boy on April 26 and has now been transferred to a different school,” he said.
It is understood that 16 other students had become pregnant since last year after they were involved in sexual relations with their boyfriends, some of whom were their classmates.
State Education, Higher Education and Human Resource Committee chairman Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said he was informed about the matter and had instructed the Education Department to investigate.
“The investigation has revealed that four students had delivered babies since last year. This is regrettable and I am very disappointed.”
