Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli believes the appointment of Arau Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim as the new Perlis Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman will help ensure the coalition’s grip on the state in the coming 16th General Election (GE16).
The Sanglang assemblyman, was among two state PN chairmen dropped from their positions during the PN Supreme Council meeting chaired by coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Shukri said Shahidan’s appointment would strengthen unity and consolidate PN’s position in Perlis.
“Congratulations to YB Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim on his appointment as the new PN Perlis chairman.
“With this appointment, I believe YB Datuk Seri (Shahidan) will continue to lead, unify and strengthen PN in the state, ensuring that the coalition remains in government and secures success in GE16,” he said in a Facebook post.
Previously, Shukri, who is also former Perlis Pas commissioner, and Pahang Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, the Indera Mahkota MP, were removed from their positions as state PN chairmen. (hyperlink:https://www.nst.com.my/amp/news/nation/2025/10/1303373/saifuddin-mohd-s…)
Saifuddin has since been replaced by Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Apart from strengthening PN’s structure at the state level, Shukri’s removal is also seen as linked to growing grassroots dissatisfaction towards him within Perlis Pas.
He was also dropped as state Pas commissioner during the party’s recent Muktamar, replaced by veteran leader Ahmad Ali.
Adding to the setback, Shukri failed to secure a place among the 18 elected members of the Pas central committee for the 2025–2027 term, while Shahidan ranked 14th in the polls.
However,Shukri was later reinstated to the central committee through an appointment by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.nst
