PAS to stage protest if Quran burning goes ahead

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS Youth said it would urge Muslims to protest outside the United States embassy here if an evangelical church in Florida goes ahead with a Quran-burning ceremony on Saturday.

The Dove World Outreach Centre said its ceremony, organised to mark the ninth anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks, is a warning to radical Muslims.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi called any such action as a “desecration and insult to Islam which cannot go unchallenged.”

“This burning does not serve as a warning to radical Muslims but angers all Muslims,” AFP quoted him as saying.

Council of Churches of Malaysia general-secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri also condemned the planned action of the church, saying the council had sent a protest note to the embassy yesterday.

“This is not the main stand of Christians worldwide.

“Unfortunately, the issue has been played up and associated with what most Christians believe in, which is absolutely untrue,” he said.
