KUALA TERENGGANU: Almost half of the motorists in Terengganu do not have a valid driving licence and the Road Transport Department (RTD) believes this contributes to the state having the highest number of road fatalities in the country.
RTD enforcement director Abdul Rahman Daud said the offenders were mostly youths.
He was speaking at the state RTD headquarters yesterday after a special operation around the city on Friday night.
During the operation, 300 motorcycles and cars were checked and 128 summonses were issued, with three motorcycles impounded.
He said 45 per cent of motorcyclists and car drivers who were checked during RTD operation here since the start of this year did not have any driving licence.
“It is a worrisome figure, ” he said, adding that RTD had inspected 32,600 vehicles since Jan 1.
He said the figure had increased by up to 10 per cent compared with last year, when 256,789 summonses were issued for those driving without a driving licence out of the 720,000 vehicles checked during RTD operation.
He said 28,093 vehicles were impounded last year for various offences.
“There were repeat offenders who did not repent even after they were fined and their vehicles were impounded.”
Rahman urged parents to prevent their underage children from driving or riding without a licence.
“Some parents blame us when their kids are fined without realising the ramifications of letting them drive without a valid licence,” he said.
