Her odd-job labourer husband, in a fit of rage, was seen allegedly setting fire to the house before fleeing from the village.
State criminal investigation department chief Assistant Commissioner K. Manoharan said the police were in the midst of tracking down the 39-year-old suspect.
He said the man’s 35-year-old wife, who worked as a shop assistant, was in a neighbour’s house when she saw the house ablaze.
Manoharan said, with the help of neighbours and a team of fire and rescue department personnel, the woman tried in vain to douse the flames.
The blaze destroyed the house, leaving the couple and their child, with just their clothes on the back.
The police chief said initial investigations revealed that the couple were constantly squabbling over domestic issues.
He said the suspect’s wife lodged a police report against the man yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the police have detained a woman in connection with the theft of a gold necklace during the two-day Jom Heboh carnival which began on Friday, in Dataran Syahbandar here.
Kuala Terengganu police chief Assistant Commissioner Zamri Shamsuddin said said the 39-year-old suspect, from Penang, was alleged to have snatched the necklace from an eight-year-old girl.
He said on-lookers caught the woman and handed her over to the police.
