KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government has denied that the value of equipment stolen from the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium was worth as much as RM50mil, as reported by a newspaper Tuesday.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said the Public Works Department (PWD) was assessing the actual value of the equipment carted away while the thefts were being investigated by the police.

“I think the losses are lower than what were reported. How did they came up with that figure? Who gave them the figure?” he asked reporters Wednesday today.

The newspaper report said electrical wiring devices, electronic systems electronics and other items, including two generators, all valued at RM50mil were stolen from the stadium, which was closed two years ago after its roof collapsed.

Ahmad said the thefts should not have happen for security guards were stationed at the stadium.

“It might be a case of wolf in sheep’s clothing,” he said, adding that the guards did not carry out their duties earnestly, thus enabling the thieves to steal the equipments.

He said the state government was in the process of replacing the security company while repair works on the stadium would be tendered out by the PWD. – Bernama
