KUALA TERENGGANU — Livestock farmers in Terengganu suffer losses amounting to more than RM2.4 million due to the floods that hit the state recently.
State Veterinary Services Department deputy director, Dr Syed Zulkifli Syed Zainulabidin said the 700-odd affected livestock farmers were in Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang and Setiu.
“The actual amount of losses is RM2,406,000 as the farmers lost their cattle, goats, chickens and deer,” he said when met, here, today, but he had no information on the number of animals killed in the floods.
Dr Syed Zulkifli said Kemaman district suffered the biggest loss at RM1.6 million, followed by Dungun (RM470,000), Hulu Terengganu (RM210,000), Marang (RM86,000) and Setiu (RM40,400), with the figures reported by the veterinary offices in the respective districts.
He said the report on the losses would be sent to the Agriculture and Agro-Industry Ministry as instructed.
He advised livestock farmers to watch out for any outbreak of livestock animal disease following the floods.
He said the department, meanwhile, was carrying out a health programme of injecting livestock animals with vaccines to prevent disease outbreaks.
“So far since the floods, there has been no report of any livestock disease outbreak, and the department will open a mobile operations room to deal with the problem if it happens,” he added. — Bernama
