One of the vice-presidents, Datuk Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said yesterday they would propose to Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Muhyiddin Yassin that the chairmanship of the Federal Territory, Selangor, Terengganu, Penang and Kedah Umno be returned to the respective state Umno leaders as the party had regained its strength in those states.

“Discussions on the matter have been going on unofficially but nothing has been done officially. As the posts were assigned temporarily by the president, discussions must be held with him and his deputy on the return of the posts, and we need some time for this,” Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is the Defence Minister, told reporters after opening the Kemaman Umno Division delegates meeting, here.Five branches of the division had submitted resolutions seeking the return of the chairmanship of the Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee, now held by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, to Datuk Ahmad Said, the menteri besar.

These branches are Kijal; Bukit Teruna; Kuala Kemaman; Peringkat 4, Bandar Baru Cheneh and Rumah Murah Kerteh.

A reshuffle in Umno in April last year saw the chairmanship of the five states assigned to the president, deputy president and the three elected vice-presidents.

Najib took over the chairmanship of the Selangor Umno Liaison Committee, Muhyiddin, the Federal Territory; Hishammuddin, Terengganu; Dr Ahmad Zahid, Penang and Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Kedah.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the Umno Training Bureau, said the training module would be changed to focus on professional action including assimilating mental and physical strength in confronting issues raised by the opposition through psychological warfare. — Bernama
