KUALA TERENGGANU: A syndicate providing false Muslim marriage certificates and marriage declaration cards was crippled with the arrests of three civil servants including an employee of the state Religious Affairs Department.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested the three, aged between 30 and 43, in an operation here on Sunday.

A source said that based on initial investigations, the syndicate would provide false Muslim marriage certificates and declaration cards after conducting marriages in Thailand for RM3,500 for individuals, especially men who are interested in polygamy.

In the operation, a 43-year-old officer at the Religious Affairs Department, was detained here at about 12.30pm.

The source said the arrest of the suspect was made after he allegedly received RM1,000 as payment for his services to provide the marriage certificate and marriage declaration card.

The source said the second and third suspects, aged 30 and 34, were detained here at 5.30pm and 11.30pm respectively.

The MACC also seized RM100 from the two other suspects believed to be payment for the same purpose.

A seven-day remand had been obtained for the trio and they were being investigated under Section 17(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.- thestaronline
