PAS Sunday announced that Normala Sudirman, 38, will be the Opposition Pact’s candidate for the by-election for the state constituency of Tenang.

The announcement was made by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang at a function which was also attended by Keadilan president Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang.

Fondly known as Cikgu Mala, the Labis PAS Wanita head was one of those who had been shortlisted by the party to face the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the by-election to be held on Jan 30.

On the selection of Normala as the candidate, Abdul Hadi said : “PAS realises that women are also voters and they need their voice to be heard”.

He said it was also not the first time that PAS was fielding a woman as its election candidate.

Normala said she was thankful for her selection as a candidate, adding that it also proved the recognition of Pakatan Rakyat and PAS on the important role played by the women.

She is married to Makrof Abd Mutalib and the couple has a daughter and two sons.

Nomination day for the Tenang by-election is Jan 22.

Meanwhile, the BN will announce its candidate on Wednesday.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent Assemblyman Datuk Sulaiman Taha, 59, from the Barisan Nasional on Dec 17.
