KUALA TERENGGANU, July 19 (Bernama) — The first half of 2010 saw 191 university and school students in the state arrested for narcotics crime cases.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said besides drugs, 71 students were detained for involvement in other crimes such as motorcycle and property theft.

“These statistics are worrying because it involves school and university students,” he told reporters after the Terengganu Contingent Police’s monthly assembly, here today.

In the same period, he said, the Terengganu crime index had dropped by 25 per cent or 689 cases with only 2,066 crime cases recorded this year, compared to 2,755 cases for the same period in 2009.

Mohd Shukri said the most obvious decrease involved property crime, however, adding that violent crimes had increased by 46 cases, or 22.7 per cent.
