KUALA TERENGGANU – A former army commando was sentenced to 19 years’ jail by the High Court here yesterday for causing the death of his 80-year-old grandaunt two years ago.

Mohd Nassir Abdul Manan, 45, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder of Muda Mat Zin at a house in Jalan Baru, Kampung Bukit Pak Sabah, Dungun, between 9am and 7.30am on Oct, 12, 2009.

Judge Datuk Yazid Mustafa said the prosecution had produced satisfactory evidence for conviction.

He said the actions of the accused, who was under the influence of drugs at the time of the killing, had cost the life of a person with whom he had strong family ties with.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Jazamuddin Ahmad Nawawi prosecuted while Nassir was not represented.

The victim was found in a pool of blood and was believed to have been bludgeoned repeatedly with a hammer and slashed with a knife several times.

Her body was discovered by her daughter, Rokiah Ali, 56, who went to her house at 6.30pm to deliver food.

A post-mortem revealed that the victim suffered blunt force trauma and several slash wounds in the attack.

An excessive amount of water was also found in her lungs.

Nassir, who was arrested on Oct 13, 2009, admitted to disposing a knife which was used to attack the victim at a drain near Sekolah Menegah Sultan Omar, Dungun.
