Former Master’s student Siti Noor Aisyah Atan has been found guilty by the High Court of possessing 12 books related to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Shariff Abu Samah sentenced her to five years’ jail from the date of arrest, under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code.

He also ordered the books to be seized and destroyed.

In his judgment, JC Mohamad Shariff said the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He also found that Siti Noor Aishah had been inconsistent in her sworn statements.

“You claimed you had the books for research purposes, but you never even registered for the Master’s course you were supposed to have enrolled in.

“You have not been able to prove your seriousness in actually going through with the course,” he said.

On March 22, 2015, Siti Noor Aishah was arrested for possessing books on Jemaah Islamiyah, IS and al-Qaeda at Lot 1241, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Sura in Dungun, Terengganu at 12.25pm.

She was represented on Wednesday by her lawyer Mohd Kamaruzaman A. Wahab, while DPP Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli acted for the prosecution.

Previously, the High Court had heard that Siti Noor Aishah had threatened to commit suicide if her parents did not allow her to go to Syria.

Her intention was mentioned in a police report lodged by her father, Atam Jusoh, on Feb 18, 2014, in an attempt to stop her from going there.- thestaronline
