KUALA TERENGGANU: It was a long goodbye kiss for a school teacher and his wife as he could face the death sentence after being charged at a magistrate’s court here with trafficking 0.371kg of cannabis.
Abdul Karim Muhamad, 39, who teaches English at SMK Agama Zainal Abidin Ladang, hugged his wife and gave her a passionate kiss before being escorted away by police.
He is under police detention as bail was not granted, given the severity of the offence under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act, which carries the death sentence upon conviction.
The secondary school teacher is accused of committing the offence at a house in Jalan Hiliran here at about 1am on April 6.
No plea was recorded.
The accused bade farewell to his wife and other family members as he was taken away by police.
On April 6, police raided the house belonging to the accused and discovered drugs hidden inside a guitar case.
He was also tested positive for cannabis.
Police did not rule out the possibility the accused had supplied drugs to his students.
Investigations also showed that he had been an addict for about 10 years.
Senior Registrar Mohd Rusli Ahmad set May 31 for mention and the tendering of the chemist report.
