Homes, Roads Inundated, Rivers Swell

KUALA TERENGGANU – Continuous rainfall in the last 12 hours have caused several major roads in the state to be inundated by floodwaters, while dangerously swelling rivers in several districts have forced people to be evacuated to higher ground.

The water height of five major rivers here has risen beyond danger levels. Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping, at Hulu Terengganu, has hit 20.36 metres, which is the danger level.

Two rivers in Setiu are now above the alert level: Sungai Chalok (7.7m) and Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap (20.06m).

The level at Sungai Besut in Kampung La has hit 19.82 metres, while Sungai Marang at Jambatan Pengkalan Berangan is at 2.07 metres.

Meanwhile, Jalan Kampung Bukit Kepah in Hulu Terengganu has been closed to traffic, as it is submerged in 1.5 metres of water.

The road connects Kuala Pueh, Tapah, Payang Kayu, Baung and Kuala Ping.

In Marang, a 700-metre stretch of the main road at Merchang, in front of Petronas, is flooded and inaccessible to all types of vehicles.

According to the State Welfare Department’s flood portal, as of 1pm, 810 people are taking shelter at 17 flood relief centres in the districts of Setiu, Besut, Hulu Terengganu and Marang.

Relief centres operating in Hulu Terengganu are Dewan Kampung Bukit Kolam, Dewan Bukit Ara, Surau Durian Kassim, Balai Kampung Tapuh and Kampung Tok Lawit’s hall.

One family was evacuated to the Dewan Seri Putih centre in Kampung Tok Lawit, Hulu Terengganu. ln Marang, one family was evacuated to the Wakaf Tapai multipurpose hall.

In Setiu, ten families from Kampung Nyior and Kampung Nandong were evacuated after their houses were submerged in 1-metre floodwaters.

A total of 70 people from 27 families in Pelong, Permaisuri district, were evacuated to temporary relief centres in Bukit Nyior and Tok Nandong -.nst
