Police had not given up on the cases but a little help in the form of reliable information would go a long way in solving them.

“The trails on both cases have turned cold,” Shukri said when met at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at the Kuala Berang police station yesterday.

The first case was the murder of Felda Mengkawang Umno branch chairman Asimah Abdul Rahman (picture right) who was found in a pool of blood after she was stabbed to death at her home in Felda Mengkawang in September last year.

A local man was arrested but was released after police found he had no connection to the murder of the 51-year-old mother, who was stabbed more than 11 times in the abdomen and twice in the right rib.

Police said Asimah’s gold chain and bangles were also missing, adding that the victim was last seen by another neighbour at about 2pm with a group of friends before she returned home an hour later.

Footprints were also found at the back of the victim’s house, indicating that the assailant had fled into a secondary jungle behind her house.

The other case involved a nurse, Norhayati Awang, who was found murdered inside her car at the Kuala Terengganu Hospital on Aug 13, 2005.

Shukri said a man was arrested but after the remand ended, police failed to connect him to the murder.

Norhayati died from a deep slash wound to the neck.

Shukri said the deputy public prosecutor’s office recommended an inquest after studying the police investigation papers into Norhayati’s murder.

“The inquest will be held. We need some time, that’s all.”-NSTOnline
