KUALA TERENGGANU: Twenty-five male fans aged between 16 and 36 years old were arrested following the ruckus during the second leg semi-final match between Terengganu and the Lions XII of Singapore on Saturday night here.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Idris Abd Rafar said neither of them were government servants nor did they have permanent jobs.
“The detainees are remanded for four days starting today (Sunday), but one of them is on a three-day remand,” he said, adding that two of them were found to be positive with methamphetamine and would be charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
“One of them will be charged under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 with possessing flares.
“They allegedly became aggressive and started to throw stones at the police.
“That forced us to ask for help from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU). Thirty tear gas canisters were shot that night,” said ACP Idris.
An ambulance was set on fire. A police vehicle and two buses charted by Lions XII fans were also damaged.
“Four police personnel sustained minor injuries and received outpatient treatment from Sultanah Zahirah Hospital,” said ACP Idris.
Police escorted 199 Lions XII fans at 3am, Sunday, to their hotels. Four police reports were also lodged.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 for rioting, Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief and damage to property, Section 435 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by fire, and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
The nail-biting match had seen the stadium with a capacity of 47,000 swamped with 30,000 spectators with tickets, and about 1,000 without the tickets, according to ACP Idris.
