KUALA TERENGGANU – Aggresive crime prevention campaigns have contributed to the positive reduction of three per cent in the Terengganu crime index within the first quarter of this year.

Acting Terengganu Police chief, Datuk Hashim Abdul Jalil said the gain could be seen in the shrinking numbers of arrests and cases within three months, such as 2,978 individuals were arrested for drug offences this year.

He said the numbers were reduced to 781 arrests compared to the same period last year when 3,759 people were apprehended.

He said a drop to 649 cases in property crimes, such as burglary, vehicle theft, snatch theft and vandalism, were reported this year compared to last year’s 665 cases.

Meanwhile, violent crimes such as assault, murder, rape and robbery were trimmed to 94 cases this year compared to 101 cases reported last year.

“The crime index reduction has shown a positive impact and its effectiveness in the crime prevention efforts. We hope more members of the public could participate with the police in reducing the crime index,” he told reporters here, Tuesday.

He said this year’s success was due to the aggressive and holistic approach of assorted crime prevention programmes by the police in collaberation with disparate parties.- BERNAMA
