PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar said he sees no problem if PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang becomes the new Opposition Leader, replacing the now imprisoned Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

However, he said that Abdul Hadi needs to get all round support from Pakatan Rakyat, and not just from the Islamist party.

“If all can accept him as the new opposition leader, I don’t think that will be a problem,” said the Pokok Sena MP.

mahfuz omarMahfuz said the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council has yet to discuss on the replacement as their supposed meeting was put on hold following the death of PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

There have been calls by the Ulama faction within the party to nominate Hadi as the new opposition leader as he was an internationally recognised Muslim cleric.

The opposition pact has been left without a leader when the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s conviction and five-year jail term on Anwar for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar, 67, risks losing his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat as the constitution bars anyone fined over RM2,000 or imprisoned more than one year from serving as an MP.

He has until next Tuesday to file a royal pardon before he is automatically disqualified as a lawmaker.
