KUALA TERENGGANU: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) yesterday refuted allegations of certain parties that products sold at 1Malaysia People’s Store (KR1M) were not safe and of inferior quality.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Hasan Malek gave the assurance that all products found in KR1M were safe and of good quality despite being priced much lower than branded goods.

“People spreading such allegations have ulterior motives, aimed at undermining efforts by the government to provide an alternative to the people especially the lower income group to purchase daily necessities at reasonable prices.

“If there were genuine cases, inform us so that the ministry can take appropriate action…not just empty talks without making official complaints with evidence,” he told reporters after opening a KR1M, here yesterday.

Currently, there are three KR1Ms operating in Terengganu namely Kuala Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman.

Commenting further, Hasan stressed that all food products sold at KR1M have been certified safe by the Health Ministry under the ‘Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI)’ certification as evidence of their quality and safety.

“As such, the ministry wants to step up efforts to educate consumers so that the people will not be easily influenced by the allegations of certain parties.

“If there was fraud on the quality of food, the state and district consumer associations can lodge a report with the ministry via e-complaint for an investigation to be carried out,” he said.

To date, there are 378 types of products sold at KR1M covering food and non-food items while the ministry is also expanding the sale of wet products in stages nationwide. — Bernama
