A total of 1,129 delegates have begun casting their votes to determine the PAS top leadership for the 2013/15 term.

The voting process for the PAS central committee, which was held at Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam started at 3.45pm and scheduled to end at 6.30pm Friday.

Focus is on the deputy president post, where incumbent Mohamad Sabu is being challenged by Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

For the vice-presidency, Datuk Husam Musa, Datuk Mahfuz Omar and Salahuddin Ayub – all deemed to be progressive and professional leaders – are defending their posts against Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Datuk Abu Bakar Chik.

The most hotly-contest posts are those for the working committee, where 61 candidates are vying for 18 positions.

Out of 61, only 12 incumbents are defending their posts.

They include former Kuala Selangor MP Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Tumpat MP Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Sepang MP Mohamed Hanipa Maidin and former Muslimat chief Nuridah Salleh.

The newcomers, among others, are former Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan, former deputy Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Aziz, Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Raja Ahmad and a local artist Wan Aishah Wan Arifin, who is popularly known as Aishah.

Meanwhile, PAS election committee director Asmuni Awi has announced that some technical problems are affecting the working committee election.

“Therefore, the polls for working committee positions have been postponed until Saturday morning, but the election for deputy and vice presidency will go on,” he said.

Due to the technical glitch, the results of the party election, which were scheduled to be released Saturday morning, is likely to be delayed – source thestaronline
