Perikatan Nasional and Pas are expected to contest between seven to 10 seats in the upcoming Melaka state election.
PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said discussions had been held between PN and Barisan Nasional, including on the distribution of seats.
He said a basic framework had been drawn up and would now be brought before the respective parties for endorsement.
“Discussions have been held between PN and Umno recently and seat negotiations have also taken place.
“Basically, we already have a framework, but it needs to be brought to our respective parties for endorsement,” said the Kubang Kerian member of parliament.
Tuan Ibrahim said Pas had also instructed its Melaka commissioner to compile a list of potential candidates to be submitted to the party’s Syura Council for consideration.
“The Syura Council meeting on Friday will decide on the eligibility of the candidates. For now, we are collecting the names first without specifying which state constituency they will contest.
“All candidates must be screened by the Syura Council,” he said.
He said the final list of candidates was expected to be decided on Oct 2 in Perlis, adding that two names could be shortlisted for each state constituency.
Tuan Ibrahim said the principle in seat negotiations was that constituencies previously won by each party would remain with the respective party.
“For example, if a seat was previously won by Umno, even if the candidate has since joined Pas, Umno considers the seat as theirs.
“We are trying to understand this principle. However, there may be room for changes,” he said.
Melaka will hold its 16th state election following the dissolution of the state assembly, which took effect on Sept 23.
The dissolution was announced by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh on Sept 22.NST
