DUNGUN – Fearing for their safety and that of other motorists, a group of residents in Kampung Bukit Besi here today set up a barricade to prevent lorries laden with iron-ore from using the village road.

The residents also claimed that the situation had also resulted in the main road leading to the village to be damaged and dusty.

A resident, Yusoff Tahir, 52, said the condition in the village became dirty, especially after a downpour, since lorries from an iron ore quarry in the area began plying the village road.

“We also fear for the safety of our children,” he added.

The Village Development and Security Committee chairman Mohd Hamid Mohd Nor said an average of about 30 lorries would ply the road in the village daily to transport the iron ore from the quarry.

He said the action by the residents was to get the quarry operator to discuss with them on ways to resolve the matter.

The quarry operator finally agreed to discuss the matter with the residents and following a meeting, which also involved the Land and Mines Office and the District Office, Sunday, the quarry operator agreed to clean and repair the road, he added.- BERNAMA
