IPOH (March 31, 2010): All 28 Perak opposition assemblymen today walked out of the state assembly sitting over dissatisfaction with the proceeding, which entered its second day.

They left the assembly hall about an hour after the sitting began at 10am.

Earlier when the sitting began with the oral questions, the opposition representatives created a commotion, insisting that Datuk R. Ganesan was not the legitimate assembly Speaker.

They did not pose any question during this session but the Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen did.

At a news conference outside the hall, former mentri besar and Pasir Panjang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the Pakatan Rakyat representatives walked out of the sitting because Ganesan had failed to play his role as Speaker and did not follow the Standing Order.

“A man who is masquerading as Speaker has trumpeted the Standing Order when the motion of thanks on the address by the Perak Regent Raja Dr Nazrin Shah was cast aside from the main agenda of the proceeding.

“This is an affront to the people and an insult to the institution of rulers by not adhering to the Standing Order,” he said.

Meanwhile, Datuk Shaahrani Mohamad (BN-Rungkup) suggested that the title of “Datuk Seri” and “Datuk” conferred on Mohammad Nizar and Sitiawan DAP assemblyman Ngeh Hoo Kam be taken away by the Perak palace, and asked that a vote be taken on the motion.

The sitting continued with the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address. — Bernama
