PORT DICKSON, Oct 8 \u2014 As the Bagan Pinang campaign enters its final lap, PAS today claimed that its party workers have been assaulted, allegedly by Umno workers.<\/p>\n

PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said three of the party’s operations centres in the constituency were surrounded by groups of bikers, some of them armed with sharp weapons.<\/p>\n

Some of the cars owned by party officials were also damaged during the attack.<\/p>\n

According to PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, the party workers were forced to regroup at the main PAS operations centre at around 3am to prevent a similar attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore this Umno Youth had said they wanted to bring in members who have received commando-like training here, so it is clear this intention is to provoke us,\u201d said Salahuddin, accusing the Malay nationalist party of being responsible for the attacks.<\/p>\n

He said nine police reports have been lodged by the party over the incident.<\/p>\n

Salahuddin, who heads the party’s by-election machinery here, said the attacks are a sign of Umno’s desperation in the campaign. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen this pattern before,\u201d he told reporters at the daily media briefing here.<\/p>\n

Salahuddin added that the claim by Umno’s Datuk Abdul Azeez Rahim that he was attacked by PAS members on nomination day was an initial attempt by the Malay party to provoke PAS members, but the effort failed.<\/p>\n

One of the victims of the assault, Mohd Sahid Mohammad, 27, claimed that the attackers confronted him at 2.30 this morning, asking him to close down the PAS operations centre in Taman Datuk Abdul Samad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were more than 20 of them, they wanted us to dismantle our operations centre, they said we were making their job difficult,\u201d Sahid told The Malaysian Insider.<\/em><\/p>\n

He sustained a bruised eye and went for a treatment at a government clinic near the operations centre.<\/p>\n
