KUALA LUMPUR, 7 MAY, 2012:<\/strong> PAS Terengganu may field non-Muslim candidates from its Supporters Congress to contest under the party\u2019s banner in seats with substantial non-Muslim voters.<\/p>\n

PAS Dewan Ulama chief Datuk Harun Taib (pic<\/em>) told The Mole<\/em> recently: \u201cThere are quite a number of non-Muslim voters in parliamentary seats like Kuala Terengganu, Jertih, Dungun and Kemaman where a candidate from the Supporters Congress can be fielded.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

(All the seats were won by Umno\/Barisan Nasional in the 2008 general election \u2013 however, the Kuala Terengganu seat was lost to PAS in a 2009 by-election) <\/p>\n

\u201cPAS is also more likely field a candidate from the congress if there is support from non-Muslims in Terengganu towards PAS.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Asked why PAS Terengganu was prepared to field a non-Muslim in a Malay majority state, Harun, who was former PAS Terengganu commissioner, said: \u201cWe should be fair towards our non-Muslim supporters.”<\/p>\n

“However, if a non-Muslim is elected, his focus on state development must be in line with Islam.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, PAS secretary general Datuk Mustafa Ali commenting on the issue further said the party has not analyzed or finalized on its plans to field non-Muslim candidates.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn areas where there are Umno candidates, PAS will only field a Muslim to contest against the Umno candidate.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

On PAS Terengganu possibly fielding a non-Muslim, Mustafa said: \u201cWe will decide on that after we have finalized our Muslim candidates.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Prior to this, Mustafa confirmed the party will field non-Muslim candidates from its Supporters Congress in the coming elections.<\/p>\n
