{"id":8114,"date":"2012-01-18T00:18:22","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T16:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/index.php\/2012\/01\/anwar-demands-rm50m-from-utusan-over-bbc-report\/"},"modified":"2012-01-18T00:18:22","modified_gmt":"2012-01-17T16:18:22","slug":"anwar-demands-rm50m-from-utusan-over-bbc-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buletinonlines.net\/v7\/index.php\/anwar-demands-rm50m-from-utusan-over-bbc-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Anwar demands RM50m from Utusan over BBC report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"article\" class=\"article reset\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themalaysianinsider.com\/images\/uploads\/mugshots\/anwaribrahim400px_2.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" style=\"float: left;\" \/>KUALA  LUMPUR, Jan 17 \u2013 Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is demanding RM50 million in  damages from Utusan Malaysia for allegedly tarnishing his reputation in  an article accusing him of being a gay rights proponent.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter of demand issued today by Edwin Lim Suren &amp; Soh  Advocates &amp; Solicitors to the Umno-owned daily\u2019s editor and managing  editor, Anwar <strong>(picture)<\/strong> also demanded the newspaper  retract the article, publish an apology to him on its front page and  refrain from printing similarly defamatory articles in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The firm offered Utusan Malaysia a 48-hour deadline to respond, failing which it said legal action would be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Umno-linked Utusan Malaysia newspaper has consistently published  false, mischievous and scurrilous reports against the political  opposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, politically motivated and dishonest media reporting has  become the norm among many mainstream media organisations such as Utusan  Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dismal state of affairs has been created, fostered and  encouraged by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government,\u201d lawyer and PKR  vice-president N. Surendran said in a press statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, just days after Anwar was acquitted of sodomy, Utusan  Malaysia front-paged a story titled \u201cAnwar ulas isu gay\u201d (Anwar  discusses gay rights), claiming the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) de facto leader  had told a BBC interview that laws on homosexuality in Malaysia were  considered \u201carchaic\u201d and \u201cnot relevant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the said interview, the BBC reporter had reportedly asked Anwar  whether he was prepared to push for the idea of anti-discrimination as  far as gay rights were concerned, to which he had allegedly said \u201cwe  will have to review some of our archaic laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia generally believe and are  committed to support the sanctity of marriage between men and women, but  we should not be seen to be punitive and consider the archaic law as  relevant,\u201d Anwar had told BBC.<\/p>\n<p>According to Anwar\u2019s letter of demand, Utusan Malaysia\u2019s article on  the issue had inspired former PAS leader Datuk Dr Hasan Ali to comment  on the issue. The latter\u2019s comments were subsequently published in two  articles in Utusan Malaysia today, titled: \u201cTolak Anwar \u2013 Hasan\u201d (Reject  Anwar \u2013 Hasan) and \u201cParasit ancam Pas, Anwar mesti ditolak\u201d (Parasites  threatening Pas, Anwar must be rejected).<\/p>\n<p>In the articles, Hasan had reportedly referred to the interview when  slamming Anwar for allegedly calling for homosexuality to be made legal  in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt no point did Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim state that \u2018homosexuality\u00a0  should be legalised\u2019,\u00a0 or utter any words whatsoever to that effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations, and the article taken as a whole, are completely\u00a0 false, malicious and defamatory of our clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther, these allegations are calculated\u00a0 to injure our client\u2019s  credit and reputation as a public figure, and bring him into public\u00a0  scandal, odium and contempt,\u201d the letter of demand
