The notice dated 23.12.11\u00a0issued  by\u00a0UPSI&#8217;s disciplinary body has brought two charges against Adam.  The\u00a01st Charge alleges, among other things,\u00a0that\u00a0Adam has damaged the\u00a0&#8216;  good name&#8217; of\u00a0UPSI and the\u00a02nd Charge alleges that he has &#8216;endangered  morals and public order&#8217;. <\/p>\n<p>Both charges are\u00a0baseless,  unconstitutional,\u00a0illegal and plainly absurd.\u00a0In lowering Najib&#8217;s\u00a0flag,  Adam Adli was\u00a0exercising\u00a0his right\u00a0to freedom of expression which is  guaranteed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution. Adam&#8217;s action  was a legitimate and democratic protest against\u00a0Najib&#8217;s failure  to\u00a0ensure student and academic freedom by repealing the UUCA; it was  also a protest against Najib&#8217;s attempt to deceive Malaysian students  by\u00a0announcing superficial and incomplete reforms.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Adam Adli has not broken any laws of the country by  lowering the &#8216;Najib flag&#8217;. In fact, he should be lauded for\u00a0courageous  stand\u00a0in the cause of student freedom and university autonomy. In the  face of aggressive UMNO and government attacks upon him, Adam has  stood\u00a0firm and unflinching. UPSI has utterly disgraced itself, by toeing  the government line and persecuting Adam. How can UPSI justify taking  action against a student\u00a0for peacefully exercising his legal\u00a0right to  free expression under the Federal Constituion?<\/p>\n<p> UPSI has no legal or  moral right the prevent Adam from exercising his civil rights as a  citizen. In persecuting Adam,\u00a0UPSI has clearly\u00a0buckled to political  pressure from UMNO\/BN.\u00a0Thus, UPSI&#8217;s conduct\u00a0fortifies our consistent  stand that real reforms must be instituted to ensure student and  academic freedom.\u00a0UMNO\/BN&#8217;s iron\u00a0grip upon our universities and  institutions of higher learning must be ended, in order to ensure that  our universities are able to properly carry out their\u00a0functions. <\/p>\n<p>The  government must respect international norms, including UNESCO  recommendations on student and academic freedoms.\u00a0We call upon UPSI to  immediately drop all pending disciplinary charges against Adam Adli  Abdul Halim. We further call upon Prime Minister Najib to introduce  wide-ranging reforms to endure\u00a0student and academic freedom in our  country.
