KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu’s free e-Book scheme for primary students has succeeded in getting kids clamouring for information from the Internet, but the state is not amused as some inquisitive minds have wandered to forbidden sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were cases where students downloaded games which contained pornographic material and shared them with friends,\u201d State Education and Higher Education Committee chairman Razif Abdul Rahman<\/span> said, adding that sharing songs was also a norm among students.<\/p>\n

He said a few cases of such abuses have been detected since the scheme was introduced in 2007, adding that the young students were influenced by their older siblings to download the games.<\/p>\n

Razif said the state government, through the state Education Department, will take stern action against students caught downloading games.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will seize the e-Books to serve as a lesson to the others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said they had developed programs to prevent students from abusing the devices.<\/p>\n

The state government claimed the scheme had led to 15.6% of Year 6 students in Terengganu scoring straight As in the UPSR.<\/p>\n

The state government spent close to RM100mil to distribute 92,224 e-Books to primary schools statewide since 2007.<\/p>\n
