{"id":7377,"date":"2011-10-31T04:36:01","date_gmt":"2011-10-30T20:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/index.php\/2011\/10\/village-in-hangus-thats-flood-prone\/"},"modified":"2011-10-31T04:36:01","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T20:36:01","slug":"village-in-hangus-thats-flood-prone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buletinonlines.net\/v7\/index.php\/village-in-hangus-thats-flood-prone\/","title":{"rendered":"Village in Hangus that\u2019s flood-prone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"story_byline\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thestar.com.my\/archives\/2011\/10\/31\/nation\/n_10shift.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"311\" height=\"238\" style=\"float: left;\" \/>K<strong>UALA TERENGGANU<\/strong>: Every year-end monsoon season, villagers in Kampung  Chek Long, Titian Hangus brace for the worst  and unfortunately for  them, the worst occurs every time.<\/p>\n<p>It has been an annual watery nightmare for the villagers, who suffer  damage to belongings and even crops, with losses amounting to tens of  thousands of ringgit over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Villager Samsudin Yani, 50, likened the floods to a \u201cstubborn uninvited visitor\u201d. \t<span class=\"caption\"><br \/><em><br \/>[Picture &#8211; Getting prepared: Samsudin (right) and his neighbour Idris Jusoh, 40, getting ready for the \u2018stubborn uninvited visitor\u2019.<\/em><\/span><em><span class=\"caption\">Getting prepared: Samsudin (right) and his neighbour Idris Jusoh, 40, <\/span><span class=\"caption\">getting ready for the \u2018stubborn uninvited visitor\u2019.]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The labourer said family members would move electrical appliances  such as the refrigerator and television to higher ground to minimise  damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter what we do, the flood water reaches up to above knee-level and submerges my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst flood I have ever experienced was five years ago, when the  water reached up to waist-level and I had to vacate my home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He hoped the Government would improve the drainage system at   the village and its surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow villager Rubiah Yusof, 49, said she dreaded the flood aftermath because the massive clean-up was back-breaking.<\/p>\n<p>Village farmers&#8217; association <span class=\"knx-annotation\">chairman Idris Jusoh<\/span>, 40, said the 10 farmers there suffered losses averaging RM15,000 every year.<br \/><strong><br \/>It\u2019s time for fishermen to stay at home<br \/><\/strong><br \/>It is coming close to the season when bad weather wreaks havoc on fishermen who are unable to go out to sea.<\/p>\n<p>Fisherman Abdul Halim Abdullah, 50, was among the hundreds here worrying about the rainy days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe  will be powerless between November and February, most years. Some of us  find odd-jobs to make ends meet.
