The Johor government has banned Oktoberfest celebrations in the state, a couple of days after Terengganu did so.<\/p>\n
Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian said the state will not grant licences to organise any alcohol-themed festivals, The Star reported.<\/p>\n
But the state, he said, will not prohibit non-Muslims from consuming alcohol as there are \u201cpremises licensed to sell alcoholic beverages\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut to organise such a festival, a licence is required, and we, at the state government, will not issue one,\u201d the English daily reported him as saying after launching the SJKC Tampoi canteen day carnival in Johor.<\/p>\n
On Friday, PAS-led Terengganu said there will be no Oktoberfest celebrations in the east coast state.<\/p>\n
Tourism, Culture and Information Technology committee chairman Ariffin Deraman said this when refuting claims that the beer festival would be held in Terengganu.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one has applied to hold Oktoberfest here, and we will be constantly monitoring to ensure that the festival is not held,\u201d he was reported as saying.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad gave the green light for organisers to hold Oktoberfest, a beer festival, in the city, but said they needed to adhere to guidelines set by City Hall (DBKL).<\/p>\n
These include barring Muslims from participating and the events must not be held in public spaces.<\/p>\n
Oktoberfest had previously drawn criticism, with PAS, among others, objecting to the beer festival, which originates from Munich, Germany.<\/p>\n
Last year, the authorities cancelled the Better Beer Festival 2017, held in conjunction with Oktoberfest, citing security reasons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
