KUALA TERENGGANU: The state government has clarified that there will be no Oktoberfest celebrations in Terengganu, after netizens condemned the event.<\/p>\n
In a statement Friday (Oct 12), state Tourism, Culture and Information Technology committee chairman Ariffin Deraman refuted allegations that the popular beer festival will be held in the PAS-led state.<\/p>\n
“No one has applied to hold Oktoberfest here, and we will be constantly monitoring to ensure that the festival is not held,” he said.<\/p>\n
Ariffin was responding to a netizens’ protest after an anti-drunk driving campaign co-organised by a beer manufacturer and a ride-sharing company offering 1,000 free rides to revellers went viral.<\/p>\n
Netizens took a screen shot of the portal offering the services in an outlet each in Terengganu and Kelantan, and concluded that those outlets were hosting the Oktoberfest celebrations.<\/p>\n
However, Ariffin, who is also Alur Limbat assemblyman, said representatives were sent to investigate the Terengganu outlet located in Kg Cina and confirmed that no such celebrations were being held.<\/p>\n
A check on the portal revealed that the list of outlets in Terengganu and Kelantan has since been removed.<\/p>\n
The recent online protests comes not long after the cancellation of a popular island music festival after a promotional video was spread online.<\/p>\n
