{"id":66590,"date":"2018-04-04T20:25:27","date_gmt":"2018-04-04T12:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/?p=66590"},"modified":"2018-04-04T20:25:27","modified_gmt":"2018-04-04T12:25:27","slug":"bangkit-pertahan-kelantan-pas-wants-voters-to-rise-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buletinonlines.net\/v7\/index.php\/bangkit-pertahan-kelantan-pas-wants-voters-to-rise-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangkit Pertahan Kelantan; PAS Wants Voters To Rise Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faced with three-cornered fights in its stronghold, Islamist party PAS is urging Kelantan voters to \u201crise up and defend\u201d what it claims to be the only \u201cIslamic government\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n<p>PAS\u2019s new campaign, called \u201cBangkit Pertahan\u201d, is aimed at both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).<\/p>\n<p>The Islamist party has accused both parties of trying to undo its efforts at Islamising the state \u2014 the former by oppressive federal powers, and the latter by alleged treachery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangkit Pertahan may not be easy to understand except by those who understand the struggles of Islam. Only by understanding that they can feel the need for Muslims to rise up and defend the only Islamic government in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an obligation to fight, to rise up is a religious obligation,\u201d Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi, Kelantan PAS communications secretary and a state exco, told Malay Mail in a recent interview at the state secretariat office here.<\/p>\n<p>Che Abdullah said the PAS government has tried its best to Islamise the state with its limited powers, from banning gambling and the sales of alcohol in public premises, and placing the state\u2019s coffers in Bank Islam that does not practise usury.<\/p>\n<p>He said even with Kelantan\u2019s vibrant past as a centre of Islam expansion in the region \u2014 being among the places dubbed the \u201cVeranda of Mecca\u201d \u2014 such major steps could not have been done until PAS achieved a political victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why Tok Guru said whoever gave its ballot to PAS in 1990, even if he has passed away, he keeps getting rewarded by God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTakda sebab demo nak lawe kawe,\u201d Che Abdullah said, referring to and quoting the late statesman Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat in the Kelantanese dialect, meaning \u201cThere is no reason for them to oppose us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66592\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66592\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Abdullah-Che-Nawi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66592\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Abdullah-Che-Nawi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66592\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KOTA BHARU,22\/03\/2018,Kelantan State Executive Councillor Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi during his Exclusive Interview with Malay Mail at SUK.MALAY MAIL\/AZINUDDIN GHAZALI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PAS had governed Kelantan since 1974 as part of BN, before losing control of it in the 1977 state emergency. It was not until 1990 that PAS retook Kelantan, under Nik Aziz\u2019s stewardship in the state and as part of the Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Nik Aziz was appointed Kelantan mentri besar after the victory and became the party\u2019s spiritual leader the following year \u2014 positions he held until the 2013 polls, and his death in 2015, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warding off \u2018backstabbers\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PAS achieved its biggest victory in 2008 as part of then Pakatan Rakyat, winning 38 out of 45 state seats in Kelantan. By 2013, it lost five of those seats to BN.<\/p>\n<p>Since Nik Aziz\u2019s death, Pakatan Rakyat is no more. The party was split in two in 2015, with most of its progressive faction forming splinter Parti Amanah Negara.<\/p>\n<p>PAS not only decided to refrain from joining PR\u2019s successor PH, but will now go against it.<\/p>\n<p>For Che Abdullah, his colleagues-turned-rivals in Amanah were the \u201ctreachery\u201d that Nik Aziz had allegedly warned of in his final days, prompting the latter to caution against those who \u201csow chaos in the state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While Che Abdullah did not mention any names, his colleague Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan was more direct in his barbs, when speaking at a casual rally in the Kota Lama state constituency under his Kota Baru federal seat last month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66593\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Takiyuddin_Hassan_2703_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66593\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Takiyuddin_Hassan_2703_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KOTA BHARU,27\/03\/2018, ,PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan gave a speech to the supporters who attended the program Kecek Kiro Kedai KopiMALAY MAIL\/AZINUDDIN GHAZALI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is somebody who was part of the state secretariat and a leader, who suddenly ran away from our fight,\u201d Takiyuddin told a crowd of dozens, while explaining the \u201cBangkit Pertahan\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The PAS secretary-general proceeded to tell the crowd of PAS supporters that to be a Kelantan mentri besar, one must not only win a state seat and his party commands the majority in the state assembly, but he must also receive assent from the Kelantan sultan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo our friend here, think he can get that assent? \u2026 If his \u2018Datuk\u2019 title was thrown away, does that mean the Sultan agrees with him?\u201d he said, mentioning the Salor state seat.<\/p>\n<p>Salor was won by Husam Musa, a former Kelantan PAS leader and one of Nik Aziz\u2019s proteg\u00e9s who was tipped to succeed him. He has since joined Amanah and is now leading PH\u2019s assault on the east coast state.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Sultan Muhammad V revoked Husam\u2019s \u201cDatuk\u201d title, and also that of Kelantan Amanah chief Wan Abd Rahim Wan Abdullah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long fight against BN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite that, Che Abdullah downplayed PH and Amanah\u2019s chances in Kelantan, and warned that a BN victory would spell a downfall of the Islamic government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf not PAS, surely Umno [would win]. Amanah is not capable. The public can see and then compare us, in whatever sense, from the top to the bottom of their leadership,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can see that the suitable culture for Muslims and non-Muslims in Kelantan is with PAS. Even if they\u2019re not involved in Kelantan administration \u2014 to defend the government, they would defend PAS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wakaf Baru assemblyman said PAS\u2019 fight against BN has been going on for a long time, and the former is being curtailed, especially by the lack of funding for the state \u2014 manifesting itself in the absence of physical development for the state\u2019s airport, ports and highways.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Kelantan had passed its Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment 1993 that would allow severe punishments under the Islamic penal code of hudud, such as amputation of limbs for thefts, stoning for illicit sex or death for apostasy.<\/p>\n<p>PAS is currently seeking in Parliament to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal) Jurisdiction Act 1965 which limits such punishments from being implemented, but seems to find itself at the mercy of the ruling coalition to table it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have opposed BN, Umno for a long time. This new conflict, this new treachery, it would present a win to Umno if we don\u2019t go all out fighting it,\u201d he said, referring to PH.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66594\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180322MA60.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66594\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180322MA60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KOTA BHARU,22\/03\/2018,Banner Himpunan Bangkit Pertahan Kelantan around Kota Bharu.MALAY MAIL\/AZINUDDIN GHAZALI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier last month, PAS held a mega rally in the state capital here called \u201cHimpunan Bangkit Pertahan\u201d meant to rouse exactly this spirit among Kelantan voters.<\/p>\n<p>The day-long rally kicked off with a religious lecture by popular Islamic scholar Azhar Idrus in the morning, and ended with speeches from top party leaders such as president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and Che Abdullah himself as the chairman of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is using the #BangkitPertahan hashtag on social media, and several giant billboards have already been erected across the state with the same message.<\/p>\n<p>It has also printed \u201cBangkit Pertahan\u201d stickers, which shows Ahmad wearing a white skullcap over the red Kelantan flag, and the name of the campaign in both the Latin alphabet and Jawi script.<\/p>\n<p>The stickers were meant to be displayed on each supporters\u2019 motorcycles and cars, akin to a previous campaign prior to the 13th general election \u2014 which had a green \u201cK\u201d symbolising the Malay word \u201ckekal\u201d, that means \u201cto remain\u201d with PAS.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cBangkit Pertahan\u201d stickers are yet to strike a chord with Kelantan folks.
