KUALA TERENGGANU: The east coast peninsula state\u2019s city centre was not spared by the north-easterly monsoon floods.<\/p>\n
The affluent Jalan Cerong Lanjut housing area saw flood waters rising to knee-length level, causing damage to furniture and household items of rows of terrace houses.<\/p>\n
Long-time resident Yap Chuan Bin said that clogged monsoon drains near the Batas Baru car park added to their woes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere seems to be a bottleneck at the area as the gush of rainwater from the opposite Bukit Pak Apil, Bukit RTM and Bukit Panorama has restricted flow.”<\/p>\n
“Similarly affected by floods are Jalan Kemajuan, where Tenaga Nasional Berhad is situated, Taman Permint Harmoni apartments and Wisma Ali Long,\u201d said Yap, who is also secretary of the Terengganu Chinese Peranakan Association.<\/p>\n
He believed that garbage disposed off indiscriminately was also to be blamed.<\/p>\n
The Jalan Cerong Lanjut village community, safety and welfare committee is in talks with the Kuala Terengganu City Council and the Drainage and Irrigation Department to find a solution.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have raised this flooding matter with the council and other relevant agencies in the past to redesign the drainage and water retention system.<\/p>\n
\u201cAdditionally, we also highlighted the fact that there exists a muddy water pond underneath the Batu Baru car park which poses a health hazard and mosquito breeding zone.<\/p>\n
