KUALA TERENGGANU: Illegal racers have turned Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin here into their favourite track after it was turned into a one-way street last week.<\/p>\n

Traders and residents hope the Kuala Terengganu City Council would revert the street to its two-way system so that there will be peace and quiet, and business will pick up.<\/p>\n

They claimed there had been a 20% drop in business among the 100-odd traders along the street since last week.<\/p>\n

Trader Goh Bee Ai (pic<\/em><\/strong>), 34, who lives at a shophouse, said it was hard to sleep at night with the illegal racers \u201cterrorising the streets\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an obvious joy for these gangs of Mat Rempit, especially on Thursday nights.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe illegal racing poses a danger to residents there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Electrical appliances dealer How Kok Kong, 67, said the city council effected the change without consulting the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t understand the need for a one-way road as the traffic here is pretty smooth,\u201d he said, adding that road congestion had become more rampant since the switch.<\/p>\n

How also said customers were not able to retreat if they missed a shop they had intended to drop by.<\/p>\n

Restaurant owner Zawawi Muda, 54, said many customers had become frustrated over the one-way road, especially during peak hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can’t find parking on their first try, most of them would not bother to turn back because of the distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis change in road system is not benefiting anyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
