KUALA TERENGGANU – A surge in demand and adverse weather conditions – leading to low stocks – have propelled the price of fish in Terengganu by as much as 30 per cent in recent days.

State Fisheries Department director Zawawi Ali said that the supply and demand mechanism is favouring the latter, with increased purchases by families who want to break fast at home with their loved ones.

“We hope the situation will return to normal after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, when families begin eating out,” said Zawawi.

He added that up until April this year, the state consumed a total of 12,834.10 metric tonnes of fish worth RM77.005.

This represents a rise in consumption of 3.62 per cent as compared with the same period for last year.

Zawawi, however, denied that the decline in fish supplies is the result of catches being exported outside of the state.

“There is no denying that better-quality Grade A fish have been exported to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, owing to better prices, but demand for such quality fish is low in Terengganu.

“Therefore, there is adequate supply of other grades of fish – only that there has been a surge in demand during Ramadan,” said Zawawi.

Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu South Fish Traders Association deputy chairman Johari Abdul Jalil said the current situation is seasonal.

“The situation is made worse when fishermen shy away from going out to sea during the first week or so during Ramadan.

“Thus, the catch is smaller, leading to a depleted supply to meet normal demand,” said Johari.

He added that the scenario is identical during the first week of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, when fishermen take time off to rest.

Terengganu Fishermen Association chairman Mat Yassim Mohamed said adverse weather conditions since the beginning of Ramadan has also played a part in reduced catches.

“Deep-sea fishermen have been unable to venture out owing to rough seas and strong currents,” he said.

Yassim added that Kembung fish is going for RM20 per kilogramme, as compared to the usual RM14 for the same weight; while Cincaru is selling at RM10 per kilogramme, against RM6 previously.- NST
