It is the 15th by-election since Election 2008.<\/p>\n<p>EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof also said the electoral roll last updated on January 20 would be used in the by-election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe electoral roll has 10,679 registered voters, with 10,643  ordinary voters and 36 postal voters,\u201d said Abdul Aziz in a statement  issued after the EC\u2019s special meeting in Batu Pahat near here.<\/p>\n<p>Jasin District Officer Roslan Eusoff was named the by-election\u2019s returning officer.<\/p>\n<p>The by-election, Abdul Aziz said, would cost the commission RM830,000 and involve 248 election workers.<\/p>\n<p>There are seven polling districts with 21 voting streams in Merlimau.<\/p>\n<p>The seat fell vacant after the incumbent, Barisan Nasional\u2019s (BN) Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan, 54, died on January 20.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1999, BN won with a majority of 2,252 votes, 2004 (5,087 votes) and 2008 with 2,154 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamad Hidhir, who was also a state executive councillor, defeated PAS\u2019s Jasme Tompang in the March 2008 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Merlimau is located within the Jasin parliamentary constituency, a  stronghold of BN, where it won all the five state seats in Election  2008.-MalaysianInsider<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Election Commission (EC) decided tonight to hold the Merlimau by-election on March 6.
