{"id":40332,"date":"2015-11-24T13:05:50","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T05:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.buletinonline.net\/v7\/?p=40332"},"modified":"2015-11-24T12:12:52","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T04:12:52","slug":"us-muslim-teen-accused-of-clock-bomb-demands-us15-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buletinonlines.net\/v7\/index.php\/us-muslim-teen-accused-of-clock-bomb-demands-us15-million\/","title":{"rendered":"US Muslim Teen Accused of Clock Bomb Demands US$15 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Muslim teenager arrested when a teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb threatened to sue his school and the town of Irving, Texas for US$15 million, his lawyer said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Mohamed, 14, became an overnight sensation in September after his sister tweeted a photo of the aspiring inventor standing in handcuffs while wearing a t-shirt with the US space agency NASA\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n<p>President Barack Obama joined a surge of public support by congratulating the teen on his skills and inviting him to bring the clock to the White House in what was seen as a pointed rebuke to school and police officials amid accusations of Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/AHMED-MOHAMED.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-40334\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/AHMED-MOHAMED-300x225.gif\" alt=\"AHMED-MOHAMED\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Invitations poured in from Facebook, Google, the United Nations and Mohamed later tweeted photos of visits to Mecca, New York, Sudan and Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>But his lawyer insists there was a dark side to his fame, which caused \u201csevere psychological trauma,\u201d according to a letter notifying the city and school district of his demands.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Sudanese immigrants who lived in a Dallas suburb, the young robotics fan brought in a homemade clock to impress a new teacher at MacArthur High School.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Mohamed was accused of trying to scare people with a hoax bomb and escorted from the school in handcuffs.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyers insist that the school, police force and city officials violated Mohamed\u2019s rights by wrongfully accusing and detaining him and then decided to \u201ctrash\u201d him when the media got wind of the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhmed clearly was singled out because of his race, national origin and religion,\u201d attorney Kelly Hollingsworth wrote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Ahmed-Mohammed-Clock1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40335 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Ahmed-Mohammed-Clock1-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"Ahmed-Mohammed-Clock1\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a>The letter noted that Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne called the clock a \u201choax bomb\u201d during an appearance on the Glenn Beck television show and nodded as Beck and his other guest called the story \u201can influence operation\u201d in furtherance of a coming \u201ccivilization jihad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only was this dangerous \u2018baiting\u2019 that destroyed any chance the Mohamed family ever had of being truly safe and secure in the United States, but it was also defamatory,\u201d his lawyers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The family received threatening emails and left their home after their address was publicized.<\/p>\n<p>They eventually moved to Qatar after Mohamed was offered a generous scholarship. His attorneys are seeking US$5 million in damages from the school district and US$10 million from the city of Irving and said they will file a civil suit if they do not receive a reply within 60 days.
