Barisan Nasional\u2019s leader are shooting at each other on action taken by government to its member Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer, Matthias Chang, under the Security Offence (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.<\/p>\n

If attempting to topple the Prime Minister is an act of terrorism, then by that logic, Opposition leaders should also be arrested, said veteran Umno leader Tan Sri Sanusi Junid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you regard toppling the Prime Minister as terrorism, then toppling the government is even more so. So you should be arresting all the Opposition members who are out to topple the government.<\/p>\n

“It seems that toppling the government is not a crime but toppling the Prime Minister is a crime,\u201d the former Umno secretary-general said sarcastically, cted by the Star Online.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_20151012_212504\"<\/a>Sanusi was part of a group of Barisan National leaders headed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad who came together at the Perdana Leadership Foundation on Monday to voice out against the prosecution of former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer, Matthias Chang, under the Security Offence (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012<\/p>\n

\u201cThis charge against Chang and Khairuddin is ridiculous. The whole world won\u2019t believe that two persons without much wealth\u2026 they are not wealthy at all, they are indebted. That these two people are sabotaging the banking industry of the country and probably of the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Both Khairuddin and Chang were detained under Section 124 Sosma over offences deemed detrimental to parliamentary democracy.<\/p>\n

The press conference was held while Khairuddin and Chang were being charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate\u2019s court with attempting to sabotage the country\u2019s banking and financial systems.<\/p>\n

At the same press conference, former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat criticised the actions of the Government with regard to issues associated with 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).<\/p>\n

\u2018Abuse of law\u2019: Salleh reminds Mahathir of his own record <\/strong><\/p>\n

Response to the statement by the group, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak reminded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today that there had been many cases in which individuals were arrested, charged and convicted for telling the truth during his tenure as prime minister.<\/p>\n

He was responding to Dr Mahathir\u2019s press conference on the detention of former Umno branch leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (SOSMA) 2012.<\/p>\n

\"YM_Salleh_Said_Keruak_20150825_07_620_413_100\"<\/a>Dr Mahathir said this was an abuse and disrespect of the law and the only crime the two had committed was to tell the truth.<\/p>\n

Salleh said: \u201cDr Mahathir of all the people should know that the truth is subjective and just because one tells the truth does not mean one has not broken any laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr Mahathir must be reminded of many cases during his time when people who told the truth were arrested, charged and convicted for the crime of telling the truth,\u201d he said in his latest posting in www.sskeruak.blogspot.my.<\/p>\n

Citing the case of opposition figure Marina Yusoff as an example, Salleh said she was convicted and sentenced under the Sedition Act in 2000 for telling the truth and the judge ruled that just because she told the truth did not mean she was not guilty of a crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring Dr Mahathir\u2019s term as prime minister he used the Internal Security Act on dissidents and critics of the government where there was no trial.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2001, ten of (former opposition leader Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim\u2019s supporters were detained without trial on allegations that they were terrorists,\u201d he said reported by Bernama.<\/p>\n

Salleh added that six of them were detained for two years and the court later ruled that they were not terrorists and that their detention was illegal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least Khairuddin and Matthias are being allowed a trial where they can defend themselves and if they are not guilty will be freed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Salleh said let their trial determine whether what Khairuddin and Matthias said is the truth.<\/p>\n

Khairuddin, 53, who is former Umno Batu Kawan division vice chief, and Chang, 65, were charged in the Magistrate\u2019s Court here today with attempting to sabotage the country\u2019s banking and financial services.<\/p>\n

Both were charged under Section 124L of the Penal Code (Act 547) and are currently being held under the SOSMA, which does not allow bail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
