KUALA TERENGGANU: Dato Seri Tuan Guru Hadi Awang, President of the Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS), has said he does not see a new splinter entity, made up of disaffected PAS members, lasting long.<\/p>\n
“In our experience, all these splinter groups do not last more than two years,” said Mr Hadi in an exclusive interview with Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday, Jul 14th.<\/p>\n
Gerakan Harapan Baru, or the New Hope Movement – supported mainly by urban professionals – is seen by some commentators as a replacement for PAS in the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat.<\/p>\n
Headed by PAS\u2019 former deputy president Mohamad Sabu, the breakaway group is made up of PAS progressives such as Khalid Abdul Samad and Dr Hatta Ramli, who lost ground in the recent PAS party elections.<\/p>\n
However, Mr Hadi said he does not see the new movement as a threat. “I see the early signs from the signs of their support from the recent PAS party elections where they only got 20 percent support. They have been rejected by the party and will also lose the support of the people.”<\/p>\n
Malaysia’s three-party opposition Pakatan Rakyat – made up previously of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), led by Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, the Chinese-led Democratic Action Party (DAP) and PAS – has been in serious disarray in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
This came after a decision by PAS to try and implement a strict Islamic penal code, or hudud, in Kelantan, a state where PAS holds a majority. But the move is one which DAP argues is in conflict with the terms of the opposition alliance.<\/p>\n
In turn, a few days ago, the Syura Council of PAS announced it would uphold the decision of its muktamar, or general assembly, to cut ties with the DAP.<\/p>\n
“But DAP does not respect this view when in the Pakatan cooperation we can be of different opinions and approach but we cannot force the other partners. As such, PAS decided to cut ties with DAP. And DAP did this even earlier. But our relationship with some DAP leaders is still intact because there are DAP state leaders who disagreed with the central leadership,” said Hadi Awang on Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
