{"id":35603,"date":"2015-07-14T18:20:08","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T10:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.buletinonline.net\/v7\/?p=35603"},"modified":"2015-07-14T14:35:07","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T06:35:07","slug":"one-year-since-war-gaza-resistance-even-stronger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buletinonlines.net\/v7\/index.php\/one-year-since-war-gaza-resistance-even-stronger\/","title":{"rendered":"One Year Since War, Gaza Resistance Even Stronger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the one year since Israel\u2019s onslaught against Gaza, Palestinian resistance groups appear stronger than ever, say analysts<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say that Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups have become more sophisticated in the one year since Israel\u2019s \u201cOperation Protective Edge,\u201d in which more than 2,160 of the Gaza Strip\u2019s inhabitants \u2013 the vast majority of them civilians \u2013 were killed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/alqassan-march.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35606\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/alqassan-march-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"alqassan march\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe resistance in Gaza appears more sophisticated and organized one year since the war,\u201d Abdel Sattar Qassem, a professor of political science at Palestine\u2019s Birzeit University, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the losses inflicted by last year\u2019s Israeli offensive and the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip [by Israel and Egypt], resistance groups have continued to prepare for the next conflict,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to note that the Palestinian resistance in general \u2013 and the Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades in particular \u2013 \u201cis effectively working to develop new tactics and military capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Al-Qassam Brigades is the armed wing of Palestinian resistance faction Hamas, which took over the strip in mid-2007 after winning legislative elections one year earlier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rockets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Hamas unveiled two new locally manufactured rockets, which, it vowed, would be deployed by its armed wing in any future confrontation with the self-proclaimed Jewish state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effectiveness of these rockets will become apparent in the future,\u201d Al-Qassam spokesman Abu Obaida said during a Wednesday military parade in Gaza City held to mark the passage of one year since Israel\u2019s 51-day onslaught began.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rocket-alqassam.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-35608 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rocket-alqassam-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"rocket alqassam\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Since Al-Qassam first began manufacturing rockets in 2001, he added, \u201cit has gradually expanded their range, which now stands at more than 80 kilometers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A major Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip in late 2012 (during which scores of Palestinians, including numerous civilians, were killed) saw Hamas introduce its M75-class rocket.<\/p>\n<p>And during Israel\u2019s onslaught one year ago, the resistance group introduced its R160-class rocket \u2013 used to strike Israel\u2019s northern city of Haifa \u2013 as well as its J80-class rocket, which reached as far as Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Israeli army, Al-Qassam continues to conduct missile tests along the Mediterranean coast on an almost daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>In July of last year, in the first weeks of the conflict, Al-Qassam also announced that its engineers had built three different kinds of unmanned aerial drone capable of carrying out missions inside Israeli territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Israel concerned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Antoine Shalhat, an Israeli-Arab expert on Israeli affairs, the self-proclaimed Jewish state is deeply concerned by the ongoing development of the military capabilities of Gaza-based resistance groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Palestinian resistance has proven its ability to hurt Israel \u2013 militarily, politically and economically,\u201d Shalhat told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drone-alqassam.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35609\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drone-alqassam-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"drone alqassam\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe range and accuracy of the rockets being developed by Hamas, and the efficacy of its cross-border tunnels [used to strike targets inside Israeli territory], have all seen qualitative progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Recent comments by Israeli military officials appear to bear out his assertions.<\/p>\n<p>Col. Nuhi Mendel, deputy commander of Israel\u2019s Gaza Unit, was recent quoted as saying that Hamas had begun reconstituting its military infrastructure as soon as last year\u2019s conflicted had ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil now, Hamas has continued to dig [cross-border] tunnels,\u201d Mendel said in a recent interview with Israeli Public Radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the end of the operation [last year], Hamas has been restoring its infrastructure and rebuilding what was damaged,\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Qassam, for its part, recently asserted that, since last year, it had established a number of military sites adjacent to the Gaza Strip\u2019s border with Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unexpected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe performance of the Palestinian resistance in the last war wasn\u2019t expected; it was a miscalculation by the Israeli military,\u201d Walid Almodallal, head of the Gaza-based Center for Political and Development Studies, said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/hamas-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-35610 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/buletinonline.net\/v7\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/hamas-2-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"hamas-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe resistance is well aware that the next battle with Israel must be totally different in terms of the weapons deployed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The resistance in Gaza, Almodallal went on to assert, \u201cis like a regular army, which must continuously upgrade its capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July and August of 2014, Israel carried out a weeks-long offensive against the Gaza Strip with the ostensible aim of halting Palestinian rocket fire.<\/p>\n<p>Over 2,160 Palestinians were killed and thousands injured in the onslaught \u2013 mostly civilians \u2013 while hundreds of homes and broad swathes of infrastructure were reduced to rubble across the territory.<\/p>\n<p>At least 73 Israelis \u2013 68 soldiers and five civilians \u2013 were also killed during the 51-day
